The exploration of tradition in one man's life. We will be looking particularly at clothes, books, music, photography, and writing.

Young Man: Updated Traditional
This is a good example (I think) of updated traditional style. Every piece is traditional: A heavy Brooks BD, cords, a 3 btn. h-bone tweed sack, and longwings. But the shorter length of jacket, the jean cut of the cords (though I would prefer a trouser cut), and the longer inseam of the pants with some stacking and rolled cuffs update the look I think. The pocket square (one I got in the trade with ADG) is about the coolest square I've ever seen (except the square I traded to him of course).

Old Man: Pipes and Teacher Sweaters
When I walked in my teaching methods class today, someone remarked that my cardigan was a "teacher sweater." Indeed. Here I am smoking Esoterica Stonehaven in my newish meer. With my teacher sweater.
(Sorry for the crappy PhotoBooth picture. I was writing an essay while doing this)

Old Man: The Slide Rule Brigade
A while ago on AAAT, Patrick started a thread about black loafers with khakis, and whether they were cool or the exclusive domain of what he called "The Slide Rule Brigade." These aren't pennies, but the black loafer with khaki probably keeps it in that domain.
I happen to think it looks pretty cool.

I just won this hat. Didn't realize it was shipping from Australia. I guess it will take a while, but that's OK.
Donegal tweed hat.

Young Man: A Year Long Interview
Yay, I got a haircut! Rejoice.

Pocket square must have fallen down

Is this good enough?

Bonus shot of standard longboarding gear (except the topsiders). Beat up undershirt, beat up (poor fitting) jeans, beat up shoes, beat up sliding gloves, not so beat up board.
It was awesome.

Young Man: Wednesday Casual
BB/Fruit of the Loom/RRL/Topsiders
This is what I wore today, slightly modified. To class I buttoned and tucked the shirt.
When I took this I was on my way to play at the playground with three little boys. I lost the BB shirt pretty quickly. The pants are washing right now (sweat and dirt), along with my handkerchief, which got a workout too.

Old Man: Dress Shoe Advice
When my dad bought me my first pair of dress shoes in 10th grade (black Rockports), he gave me this advice about buying/trying on a dress shoe: if you had to, do you think you could run a mile in them? If not, don't buy them.
I only ran maybe 50 yds. today in my AE Hanovers (to catch the bus), but I'm glad for his advice. They felt fine.
You never know when you'll have to break out into a run.

Young Man: Boot Weather, pt. 2
It was boot weather this morning when I got dressed. However, the sun came out at around noon, rendering my tweed jacket and hat both unnecessary and cumbersome (I hate it when that happens).

J. Crew shirt/RRL jeans/LE tweed
And here are some boot pictures for Horrible Old Man (and anyone else who wants to see).

Young Man: Boot Weather
It's been raining for 'nigh a week straight here. Normally I wouldn't like it so much, but I haven't been able to wear my boots since the beginning of the summer, so all this rain (I call it boot weather) is a great opportunity for me to wear 'em again. They are looking pretty good, but might be due for another conditioning due to all the rain.
Another good thing about the rain is it kept a lot of the drunk assholes away from work last Saturday.

Old Man: Thrift Store Shopping
I don't have pictures up yet, because I went last night on the way to work and this morning on the way to class (in class right now; don't tell the teacher), but I scored two great 3/2 sack suits the past two days.
One is medium to dark gray (not quite charcoal) and solid. It is the house brand of some men's shop (never heard of it and can't remember now, but I will take a picture). Everything fits well and I'm set to wear it tomorrow to observation.
The other is a solid medium blue from Norman Hilton. I've never had a NH suit/jacket before, but from what I read they are high quality. The jacket fits great, but the pants waist is much to small. I'm going to work on altering the waist of these pants and see if I can get that down. I'll inform you of the results when I get around to it (won't be for a while).
Both are full canvass (I think) and awesome.
Look for the pictures later tonight or tomorrow afternoon.
Conor
EDIT: Oh, and if I can't figure out the waist alterations I'll put the suit up here for sale.

Young Man: Closet Cleaning
This past Saturday my wife helped me clean out my closet. And that pile of clothes near my side of the dresser. It was much needed. I got rid of two whole trash bags of clothes. They are all going to the thrift store. My closet is still very full, but at least I know I will wear all of the stuff in there now. And none of my clothes are in that pile on the floor (and I can walk around my side of the bed). It is great.

I went to the 'ol high school today. Not too long of a post today, I've been feeling sick for a few days. Looking OK, but feeling like shit.

Old Man: Fall Preview
Yesterday morning and this morning it was around 65 degrees until lunch. I've mentioned it before, but fall is my favorite season. I don't care too much for spring/summer, but fall is my jam. Yesterday I got to give myself a little preview of fall.

J. Crew shirt/thrifted cardigan (one of my favorites)/RRL jeans/AE Hanovers
I had to ditch the sweater in the afternoon, but it was nice to be able to wear one for a few hours. Forgive the goofy expression and messy hair, but I only had one class, and didn't feel like going through too much trouble (just wanted to sit outside in the cool air).
We've had the windows open and the AC off for the past 3 or 4 days in a row. I love it.

Old Man: Briefcases
I've been looking to upgrade from my black messenger bag to something a little more professional, especially since I'll be in schools a lot more this year. However, since I will be a teacher (hardly an environment where formality is required), I wanted something that was still a little rugged. The obvious choice was Filson. I was originally looking at the 256, but figured that would be too small. Then I wanted to get the 257, but it was a little more than I wanted to spend. Then, when I was last on Crane's website (great store and place to shop, they took care of me), I saw the new "Passage Luggage" collection, specifically the Saddlebag Briefcase. That's what I got and it is awesome.

When I take it to class, I'll use the shoulder strap (kind of like a messenger bag), but when I go to schools, I'll carry it by the handle and tuck the strap in the bag. A bit more professional.

Young Man: New Music
David Bazan's new album "Curse Your Branches" came out today and I'm on my third listen through. He is one of my favorite artists and this cd is so awesome. The music makes me so happy and the lyrics make me so sad. Anyways, enjoy this live version of "Hard to Be"
